ForWords primary goal is to support students as they gain fluency and proficiency in spoken and written English. Through daily work with students and their teachers, ForWords provides our students the opportunities to add to their literacy skills, publish their work, succeed in school and prepare for college and/or the work world. ForWords’
programs offer our students opportunities to practice their basic speaking and presentation skills, improve their English, and speak in public. Projects include spoken-word performances, a mock trial, video presentations, presentations at community meetings, job interview practice, and interviewing community leaders and elders. At ForWords we believe that the acquisition of 21st century technology skills is critical for success in our democracy and in the marketplace. ForWords provides a digital arts/technology teacher and equipment for our students as they work on basic word processing, digital storytelling, and video/digital camera skills, as well as providing a wide range of publishing and software opportunities. Our students have digitally created and published a variety of their own writing, including poetry, personal stories, guides for high school students, essays, letters, and reports. ForWords
is committed to providing in-service training in all areas of literacy and technology for our students’ teachers. ForWords trains, mentors, and coaches our students’ teachers. ( Click for program example )



At
ForWords we believe that involving our community in our projects is integral to the success of our students and the well being of our community. ForWords offers community members and leaders the opportunity to attend celebrations of student work and explore venues outside of the local neighborhood including museums, parks, and other public spaces.
